The Research Unit for Systems Analysis and Interdisciplinary Mental Health Studies (PASBI)

the Clinic of Psychiatry, Combat Stress, and Psychotraumatology

the Military Institute of Medicine – National Research Institute

Szaserów 128, 04-141 Warsaw, Poland

Our mission is to develop and disseminate reliable knowledge about the psychological, sociocultural, and systemic determinants of mental health in military and civilian environments. Through interdisciplinary research, analysis of healthcare systems, and evaluation of preventive and therapeutic measures, we strive to promote health and resilience in society. We also support military personnel, veterans, and their families by promoting best practices, counteracting stigmatization, and strengthening the effectiveness of healthcare systems.

PASBI aims to become a leading research center in Poland for mental health research among military and civilian populations, setting standards for knowledge, diagnosis, and prevention. We envision health security as an indispensable element of national security and a psychiatric care system characterized by effectiveness, accessibility, and a foundation in current scientific evidence. We aim to use the results of our research to support the development of modern health policies, raise public awareness, and contribute to the development of a culture of care, trust, and responsibility within the armed forces and throughout society.

Our research projects and analyses strengthen health security, which, in today’s world, is dynamic, relational, and multidimensional. Studying health risks and crises involves identifying threats and reflecting on ways to overcome them, as well as supporting adaptation to conditions characterized by growing uncertainty and volatility.

PASBI develops, integrates, and disseminates knowledge to strengthen society’s mental resilience, using dual-use strategies that enable the transfer of innovative solutions, tools, and good practices between civilian and military sectors. Consequently, both the armed forces and civilian healthcare systems can benefit from the most effective methods of mental health prevention, diagnosis, and support.

The PASBI is open to collaboration with national and international research centers in the following areas:

  • Research on the prevalence and determinants of mental health problems and exposure to stress in civilian and military populations, including soldiers’ families and other related groups.
  • Analysis of the functioning of the psychiatric healthcare system, including an assessment of the quality and effectiveness of prevention and treatment programs for military personnel and the general public, including prevention of suicide, addictions, and other mental health problems.
  • Research on psychosocial working conditions in military and medical institutions, taking into account factors related to the organization and conditions of work that determine commitment, job satisfaction, stress, burnout, and employment retention. The PASBI also analyzes the mechanisms of concealing and disclosing health problems in professional environments.
  • Analysis of the impact of gender roles and stereotypes on mental health, experiences using healthcare, and barriers to accessibility among soldiers and veterans, in order to develop more effective preventive programs and treatment services.
  • Research on sexuality, interpersonal relationships, and family functioning in the military environment, including relationship quality, parenting, and the challenges of military service. The PASBI also analyzes interpersonal violence and sexual aggression phenomena, including crimes committed by soldiers. It identifies the determinants of these crimes and formulates recommendations for effective preventive, intervention, and educational measures.
  • Sociological and cultural research on the army, especially the functioning of military medical services, social attitudes toward the army, and internal processes affecting the organizational efficiency of the armed forces. This includes research on institutional trust, the role of women in the military, and their participation in peacebuilding and conflict resolution processes.
  • The initiation, coordination, and dissemination of scientific knowledge in the field of prevention and health communication in military and civilian environments to strengthen mental resilience, promote health, and counteract the stigmatization of individuals struggling with mental health problems.
